Money Maths

Having trouble working out just how much money you will save on a sale item? Year 6T students have been mastering the maths involved. The tricky part is converting the % discount into a $ figure. So here is a great little game from Maths Playground that takes you through the whole process. If you get stuck along the way Percent Shopping will explain what you should do to get to the next step. All I have to do is find a shop that gives the same sort of fantastic discounts in real life. Have fun learning. look for the link in the right hand column of this page.

End Of Semester One

The last few weeks at school have been go, go, go. The whole semester has been very busy and the last few weeks have been no exception.

Earlier in the year we had visited a local research farm where we learnt about growing crops, controlling insect pests and conducting soil testing. We planted seeds (corn, water melon and cucumber) on our earlier visit. Last week we visited again to pick the crops. The corn was high and the students were scattered throughout the crop. It sounded as if the corn was giggling, chattering and shaking with excitement. The picking was followed by sorting and grading the crop. Then we all shared in a taste testing – yum. Taking some of the veggies home to our families was a real pleasure.

A sample of our crops has been entered in the local agricultural show for judging.  We are proud of our efforts and had a great deal of enjoyment gaining an insight into the farming practices and challenges of our area. Thank you to our farming tutors.

This week we are looking forward to our school sports festival, lots of running, long jump and high jump. Australia is a sporting nation and our school loves sport. Every year we are proud to see students from our school earn a place on regional and state teams for a variety of sports.

This week we are finishing up our QuadBlogging challenge, it has been a wonderful learning experience.

We will top such a successful semester off with a class party before a well earned holiday.

Senior Camp.

With Senior Camp fast approaching I know everybody is busy getting ready. As we have a very early start on the morning we leave school for the camp please remember to set an alarm clock or two. Details of our departure and return dates and times are in a handout for parents. Parents if you need another copy please call into the school office and pick one up.

If you are a bit nervous about going on camp don’t worry I am coming with you. This will be my first school camp and the first ever camp away from my family so I am excited and can’t wait to try all of the great activities.

Look out fun, here we come!

Crazy Socks

Check out the crazy socks some 6T students wore to school today. These students were celebrating the work of our school crossing guards often called “Lollipop Ladies” in Australia. These hardworking ladies and gents keep our school children safe as they use busy “School Crossings” (not to be confused with “Zebra Crossings”) at the start and end of each school day.

Harmony Day

Harmony Day has been celebrated in Australia on 21 March each year since 1999. It is a day when we celebrate the diversity of our multicultural nation. This week we celebrated Harmony Day with a special school parade. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have always lived in Australia and its nearby islands however other Australians come from very diverse backgrounds. To show respect to the Aboriginal culture and heritage of the the traditional custodians of the land we live in, our school leaders gave an “Acknowledgement of Country”. (This happens throughout Australia before an event, function or meeting takes place.) Most of the population of Australia is made up of people who came from other countries either recently or many generations ago. 6T students displayed the flags of countries that members of our class have family links with. You might be able to identify some of the flags. Times Tables Challenge Results

A hushed silence fell over our classroom this week as we went head to head with our Deputy Principal in a 7x, 8x and 9x tables challenge using the Hit The Button interactive game. The first round went to the students winning by one correct answer. The second game evened the score with a close win to the  Deputy Principal. The tie breaker went to the Deputy Principal although we gave him a good run for the honour. Congratulations to all 6t students who have achieved instantaneous recall of their times tables. Congratulations to our Deputy Principal and thank you for the challenge, it was fun.
